Introducing Basil

I’m sorry that I haven’t updated since Augest. However that is because of this little guy.

His name is Basil and he is round about 4 months old now the pic above was taken when he was 6 weeks.

I can’t say for sure when I will come up with a real post so I’ve posted this in the mean time.

On the back of this book it lists some of the objections that Atheists raised regarding Christianity that will be answered in this book

There’s no such thing as absolute truth
Because of suffering and evil, God cannot possibly exist
Science and the Bible are not compatible
The Bible is filled with myths and contradictions
The claim that Jesus is the “only way” is narrow-minded

I actually have some of the same objections myself so I was very interested in seeing how a Christian may respond to them I am going to cover the objections mentioned above and tell you how this book answers them.

There’s no such thing as absolute truth

The author Ron Rhodes covers this topic on pages 11-15 and on page 13 & 14 he says this.

The problem is, the view that all truth is relative is not satisfying. One might understand the statement “all truth is relative” to mean that it is an absolute truth that all truth is relative. Of course, such a statement is self-defeating, since there are supposedly no absolute truths, and is therefore false. Second, one could understand this as saying that it is a relative truth that all truth is relative. But such a statement is ultimately meaningless.

I don’t know about you but I feel dizzy after reading that. I think I understand what Ron is saying here he’s appears to be saying that to say that there is no absolute truth is to claim that statement is a absolute truth. I’d say that’s a fair point I don’t really have anything else to say to this except it would have been nice if he had wrote that in a way that didn’t make my head spin.

Because of suffering and evil, God cannot possibly exist

This objection is covered in chapter 12 which is titled God And The Problem Of Evil and on page 229 Ron quotes from a book called Designer Universe: Intelligent Design and the Existence of God written by Jimmy H Davis and Harry L Poe

The fact that ugliness, thorns, death, pain, suffering and chaos are present in the world does not disprove design. infestation by termites does not prove the house did not have an architect. Vandalism does not prove the house did not have an architect. Arson does not prove the house did not have an architect. Sloppy homeowners who do not paint or carry out the garbage do not prove the house did not have an architect. These matters simply raise questions about the situation of the house since it was built.

I agree with this in theory but the difference between God and a architect is that God is meant to be all powerful so I would personally re-word that objection to say that the existence of pain and suffering in this world might prove that God doesn’t seem to want to do anything about it.

Science and the Bible are not compatible

I think this is covered in chapters 4, 5 and 6 I say I think because there isn’t a section directly covering this which I somewhat surprised about as I thought they would try and use some passage in the bible to prove it does have Scientific merit.

Even-though I am no Scientist I would agree with the statement above as the bible believes in miriclases while Science does not. Science may not know all the answers but it doesn’t usually jump to the supernatural as a explanation for something that is currently unexplainable.

The Bible is filled with myths and contradictions

This part is covered in Chapter 9 on page 169-174 he gives a list which Ron calls A Sampling of So-Called Contradictions. I will only write the first one he covers as this is one I have made a note of in my Observations of The Bible series I have going here.

Genesis 2:17-Did Adam die the same day? Some point out that Genesis 2:17 says Adam would die the same day he ate of the forbidden fruit, but Genesis 5:5 says Adam lived to the age of 930 years. There is no real contradiction here, for Adam and Eve did die the day they ate the fruit. They did not die physically, but they died spiritually

He then goes on to say that death carries the idea of separation as death is when the soul is separated from the body. This explanation sounds a bit like a cop out to me and besides God’s punishment for this seems unduly harsh. Let says that one of you readers came into my garden and decided to take a fruit of one of my trees and I catch you eating it I might tell you to get your thieving hands of my fruit but I wouldn’t sentence you and the future generations of your family to death for it as that would be cruel. Well according to the bible that is what God does we are all being punished by illness and death for what Adam and Eve did all those centuries ago.

The claim that Jesus is the “only way” is narrow-minded

This is covered in pages 197-204 and on page 198 he points out

While saying Jesus is the “only way” may seem narrow-minded, there are many “narrow options” in life that are not necessarily bad. For example, sometimes there is only one operation that can save your life. Sometimes there is only one road out of a forest. There is only one correct formula for Pepsi.

While it is true that there are many narrow options in life most of them don’t have the threat of being tortured forever by a so called loving  if you don’t follow that option.

I do think this book is very useful for people who debate with Christians to find out how the Christian they are debating with may respond to a point they raise.

Observations On The Bible: Genesis 13-15

18 May 2009
Genesis 13-15

Genesis 13:10
So Lot raised his eyes and saw the whole District of the Jordan, that all of it was a well-watered region before Jehovah brought Sod´om and Go·mor´rah to ruin

Jehovah seems determined to bring them places to ruin.

Genesis 13:13
And the men of Sod´om were bad and were gross sinners against Jehovah

Yes but what exactly made them such gross sinners?

Genesis 13:14-17
14 And Jehovah said to A´bram after Lot had separated from him: “Raise your eyes, please, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, 15 because all the land at which you are looking, to you and to your seed I am going to give it until time indefinite. 16 And I will constitute your seed like the dust particles of the earth, so that, if a man could be able to count the dust particles of the earth, then your seed could be numbered. 17 Get up, go about in the land through its length and through its breadth, because to you I am going to give it

That’s nice that Jehovah wants to give Abram’s descendants some land as by the sounds of it there is going to be a lot of them!.

Genesis 14:20
At that A´bram gave him a tenth of everything

What I don’t get is wherever Abram gave the priest 10th of everything or god?. Maybe this is where the whole give 10% of your earnings to the church bit comes from?

Genesis 15:4-5

4 But, look! the word of Jehovah to him was in these words: “This man will not succeed you as heir, but one who will come out of your own inward parts will succeed you as heir.”
5 He now brought him outside and said: “Look up, please, to the heavens and count the stars, if you are possibly able to count them.” And he went on to say to him: “So your seed will become

One since when god was shy about a human southward areas I mean he created them after all. And this seems to be second time god has implied that Abram’s going to have lots of descendants

Observations Of The Bible: Genesis 10-12

15 May 2009
Genesis 10-12

Genesis 11:4-7
4 They now said: “Come on! Let us build ourselves a city and also a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a celebrated name for ourselves, for fear we may be scattered over all the surface of the earth.”
5 And Jehovah proceeded to go down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men had built. 6 After that Jehovah said: “Look! They are one people and there is one language for them all, and this is what they start to do. Why, now there is nothing that they may have in mind to do that will be unattainable for them. 7 Come now! Let us go down and there confuse their language that they may not listen to one another’s language

Um I wonder why Jehovah didn’t like them building that tower? I’m getting the sense that he feels threatened by it for some reason?

Genesis 12:11-19
11 And it came about that as soon as he got near to entering Egypt, then he said to Sar´ai his wife: “Please, now! I well know you are a woman beautiful in appearance. 12 So it is bound to happen that the Egyptians will see you and will say, ‘This is his wife.’ And they will certainly kill me, but you they will preserve alive. 13 Please say you are my sister, in order that it may go well with me on your account, and my soul will be certain to live due to you.”
14 So it happened that, as soon as A´bram entered Egypt, the Egyptians got to see the woman, that she was very beautiful. 15 And the princes of Phar´aoh also got to see her and they began praising her to Phar´aoh, so that the woman was taken to the house of Phar´aoh. 16 And he treated A´bram well on her account, and he came to have sheep and cattle and asses and menservants and maidservants and she-asses and camels. 17 Then Jehovah touched Phar´aoh and his household with great plagues because of Sar´ai, A´bram’s wife. 18 With that Phar´aoh called A´bram and said: “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I was about to take her as my wife? And now here is your wife. Take her and go!”

I can understand Abram not wanting to get killed but surely Sarai would have been more likely to get hurt if she did lie and say she was Abram’s sister?. And what was the point of Jehovah cursing the Pharaoh with plagues over it? I thought the plagues came later?

Observations On The Bible- Genesis 7-9

Credit to Religious Studies Website

14 May 2009
Genesis 7-9

Genesis 8:1
After that God remembered Noah and every wild beast and every domestic animal that was with him in the ark, and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters began to subside

I’m a bit concerned that Jehovah seemed to have forgotten about Noah and the ark for a while

Genesis 8:3,6
3 And the waters began receding from off the earth, progressively receding; and at the end of a hundred and fifty days the waters were lacking 6 So it occurred that at the end of forty days Noah proceeded to open the window of the ark that he had made

I thought the flood was only supposed to last for 40 days yet here it says that it’s taken 150 days

Genesis 8:20-21
20 And Noah began to build an altar to Jehovah and to take some of all the clean beasts and of all the clean flying creatures and to offer burnt offerings upon the altar. 21 And Jehovah began to smell a restful odor, and so Jehovah said in his heart: “Never again shall I call down evil upon the ground on man’s account, because the inclination of the heart of man is bad from his youth up; and never again shall I deal every living thing a blow just as I have done.

Ok first of Jehovah has just flooded the entire earth and now that it is dry and Noah and his clan make an alter for him! I’m sorry but I would be a bit grumpy since after all it was god that caused it. Well it’s nice that god promises not to do that kind of thing again but it’s a little worrying when he says that the inclination of the heart of man is bad from the youth up which if I remember rightly was one of the reasons that god flooded the earth in the first place.

Genesis 9:4
Only flesh with its soul—its blood—YOU must not eat.

I think this is one of the passages that JW’s use as to explain why they don’t have blood transfusions

Genesis 9:6
Anyone shedding man’s blood, by man will his own blood be shed, for in God’s image he made man

I don’t think this will solve the problem and anyway Jehovah has just drowned most of world’s population so does mean that god’s blood should be shed?

Genesis 9:13,15

13 My rainbow I do give in the cloud, and it must serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.15 And I shall certainly remember my covenant which is between me and YOU and every living soul among all flesh; and no more will the waters become a deluge to bring all flesh to ruin

It’s nice that god has something to remind him not to flood the earth again. There is just one problem though it seems he left himself a loophole so he can use other means of bringing all flesh to ruin if he feels the need to do so next time he could decide to burn us all.

Genesis 9:21-24
21 And he began drinking of the wine and became intoxicated, and so he uncovered himself in the midst of his tent. 22 Later Ham the father of Ca´naan saw his father’s nakedness and went telling it to his two brothers outside. 23 At that Shem and Ja´pheth took a mantle and put it upon both their shoulders and walked in backwards. Thus they covered their father’s nakedness, while their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father’s nakedness.
24 Finally Noah awoke from his wine and got to know what his youngest son had done to him. 25 At this he said:
“Cursed be Ca´naan.
Let him become the lowest slave to his brothers

This is harsh why is Noah punishing Canaan when he wasn’t even involved and all his dad and uncles did was cover Noah up when he was walking about butt naked and drunk.

I must warn anyone thinking of buying this book that this book was written as a witnessing tool for Christians to use when Jehovah’s Witnesses knock on their door.

Before I go any further though I must ask a question. If this book was written in 2001 then why did Ron decide to use the 1961 version of The New World Translation, the Jehovah’s Witness bible, When the version they use is the 1984 one? At least that was still the case when I stopped going to the Jehovah’s Witness meetings in 2005.

May I suggest a new title for this book. I’m feeling that it should be called How to prove the Trinity is right to Jehovah’s Witnesses As it seems that this is Ron Rhodes’ main problem with JW’s as he spends at least 3-4 chapters of this book trying to prove that the trinity is a bibicial doctrine. I’m not sure whether it is bibicial or not but what I do know is that how it makes God sounds like he suffers from  Mutiple personality disorder with the difference that all of them think they are God. Then again the Trinity has never made much sense to me so…

One last thing and then I will end this review. In the last chapter Ron suggests that if after telling the Jehovah’s Witness about how you found Christ they are interested in having a relationship with Jesus then you should lead them into a pray like this:

Dear Jesus
I want to have a relationship with you
I know I can’t save myself because I’m a sinner.
I believe you died on the cross for me. Thank you
I accept your free gift of salvation.
Thank you, Jesus

However I must point out that the Jehovah’s Witnesses have a way of dealing with this kind of thing and I don’t think you will like it. You see they have a book called Reasoning From The Scriptures which was published in 1989 and it is used to help them deal with certain situations when going door to door. Here is a part dealing when people ask them to pray with them.

If Someone Says—

‘Pray with me first, then give me your message’

You might reply: ‘I’m glad to know that you are a person who appreciates the importance of prayer. Jehovah’s Witnesses also pray regularly. But there is something that Jesus said about when and how to pray that may be new to you. Did you know that he told his disciples not to offer public prayers with a view to having others see that they were devout, praying persons? . . . (Matt. 6:5)’ Then perhaps add: ‘Notice what he went on to say should be of primary concern to us and what we should put first in our prayers. That is what I have come to share with you. (Matt. 6:9, 10)’

Or you could say: ‘I know that representatives from some religious groups do that. But Jehovah’s Witnesses do not, because Jesus instructed his disciples to go about their work of preaching in another manner. Instead of saying, “When you enter a house, first pray,” notice what he said, as found here at Matthew 10:12, 13. . . . And see here in verse 7 what they were to talk about. . . . How can that Kingdom help people like you and me? (Rev. 21:4)’

Oh by the way I didn’t type the part above by hand instead I copied and pasted it from my copy of the 2003 Watchtower CD-Rom that was given to me in 2004.

As for Ron Rhodes book it is interesting to read but if you want to know about their beliefs then try something else. I will let you know if I find anything that fits the bill.

The Wonder Of Heaven

On the back of the book it says

“The Wonder of Heaven punctures the notion of a harp strumming do-nothing eternity. After glimpsing your home with God, and with people as God meant them to be, you will filled with an anticipation that make your life brighter stronger and more vibrant today”

However after finding out that the only other thing I can do is to worship God all the time I think I’d rather play the harp.

Despite that I have found this an interesting look on how some people think Heaven is like or I should say The New Heaven since that’s what this book mainly goes on about.

My favourite part was pages 110 & 111 where it has a What do children think about heaven and my favourite kids vision of  heaven is the first one which says

“Michael, age 6, said of his house in heaven, “My house will be made of Reese’s Cups, and filled with chocolate”

If I go to heaven I’m definitely visiting your house kid! Just make sure you have some milk chocolate there for me ok? although I don’t know what a Resse’s Cup is?. Let me just google that…

Is this the Reeses Cup you mean?

Is this the Reese's Cup you mean?

I think I’ve had something like that before except it was milk chocolate while I was in Florida I think.

However I do have a few gripes with the content of the book

1. Is that the same passages from the bible keep getting repeated over and over again Reverlation 21:4 being a favourite. It makes me wonder if Ron Rhodes was trying to pad the book out?.

2. This is the biggest gripe. In the chapter Postscript-An Invitation to Believe he mentions how you can go to heaven if you have a relationship with Jesus and a sample pray you can use to start it. That isn’t the problem though it’s what is written on the last part of that chapter Ron gives an address for Christians to write to so he can help build their faith. It just smacks to me that he’s trying to make more money by doing this.

3. I only mention this as I feel that to most people this would be their idea of hell. As according to Ron there will be no sex in heaven at all. Check out this paragraph on page 137.

“Contrary to the teaching of some modern Christians I do not believe that married Christians will continue to to engage in sex in heaven. We will be similar to angels in the sense of not being married (Matthew 22:30) procreating or sharing sexual intimacy. I believe we are most accurate biblically when we banish from our ideas of heaven the various carnal and sensual pleasures of the present world. Such pleasures, which were intended only for this world of imperfection, will be replaced by others of a far superior nature”

All in All I do think this is an interesting book to read if you are curious about how some people see Heaven but please don’t take it too seriously as really no one knows what happens when we die not even Ron Rhodes.

Observations On The Bible Genesis 4-6

13 May 2009
Genesis 4-6

Genesis 4:9-10
9 Later on Jehovah said to Cain: “Where is Abel your brother?” and he said: “I do not know. Am I my brother’s guardian?” 10 At this he said: “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground
Ah maybe Jehovah is pretending he doesn’t know where Abel is to see wherever Cain is honest or not?

Genesis 4 :11-15
11 And now you are cursed in banishment from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood at your hand. 12 When you cultivate the ground, it will not give you back its power. A wanderer and a fugitive you will become in the earth.” 13 At this Cain said to Jehovah: “My punishment for error is too great to carry. 14 Here you are actually driving me this day from off the surface of the ground, and from your face I shall be concealed; and I must become a wanderer and fugitive on the earth, and it is certain that anyone finding me will kill me.” 15 At this Jehovah said to him: “For that reason anyone killing Cain must suffer vengeance seven times.” And so Jehovah set up a sign for Cain in order that no one finding him should strike him

Hold on there seems to be a inconsistency here. I think Jehovah was way harsher with Cain’s parents for eating fruit then he is with Cain murdering his brother. Sure he curses Cain’s crops the same as with his parents but Jehovah actually protects Cain from someone murdering him by setting up a sign. Maybe Jehovah has softened a little?. And again how can someone hide from God when he’s everywhere?

Genesis 4:16
With that Cain went away from the face of Jehovah and took up residence in the land of Fugitiveness to the east of E´den
I thought that Cain’s parents were thrown out of Eden? So how can Cain go to the east of Eden?

Genesis 4:17

Afterward Cain had intercourse with his wife…

Ah now here’s a question where did Cain find his wife? One theory is that Cain actually married his sister but there has been no mention so far of Adam & Eve having any daughters. Come to think of it there’s no mention of Adam and Eve’s third son Seth either. Maybe there were two sets of men and women which might explain why it seemed that male and female were created on the 5th day and then again after the 7th day? But then that wouldn’t match up with Eve being the mother of all things.

Genesis 4:25
And Adam proceeded to have intercourse again with his wife and so she gave birth to a son and called his name Seth, because, as she said: “God has appointed another seed in place of Abel, because Cain killed him
Ok so here’s Seth but no sign of any daughters though unless they are not considered important enough to mention?

Genesis 5:4
4 And the days of Adam after his fathering Seth came to be eight hundred years. Meanwhile he became father to sons and daughters.

So Adam and Eve did have daughters but it appears this was after Seth was born so Cain would have had to wait a while before having intercourse if his wife was his sister.

Genesis 6:2,4
2 then the sons of the [true] God began to notice the daughters of men, that they were good-looking; and they went taking wives for themselves, namely, all whom they chose 4 The Neph´i·lim proved to be in the earth in those days, and also after that,
when the sons of the [true] God continued to have relations with the daughters of men and they bore sons to them, they were the mighty ones who were of old, the men of fame

My Book of Bible StoriesImage via Wikipedia

The Nephilim appear to be part human and part angel. However it doesn’t say anything about them being giants or about them hurting people like I read in “my book of bible stories” as a child but they may still be very strong as it says they were the mighty ones.

Genesis 6:3
After that Jehovah said: “My spirit shall not act toward man indefinitely in that he is also flesh. Accordingly his days shall amount to a hundred and twenty years.

It looks like we’re really gotten into Jehovah’s bad books since then since you rarely hear of anyone living anywhere near 120 years now-a-days.

Genesis 6:5-7
5 Consequently Jehovah saw that the badness of man was abundant in the earth and every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only bad all the time. 6 And Jehovah felt regrets that he had made men in the earth, and he felt hurt at his heart. 7 So Jehovah said: “I am going to wipe men whom I have created off the surface of the ground, from man to domestic animal, to moving animal and to flying creature of the heavens, because I do regret that I have made them

Oh dear besides the angels mating with humans I wonder what else they did to Jehovah regret ever creating them?. I mean a child may do something that a parent doesn’t approve of but that usually make the parent regret having the child!.

Genesis 6:11-13
11 And the earth came to be ruined in the sight of the [true] God and the earth became filled with violence. 12 So God saw the earth and, look! it was ruined, because all flesh had ruined its way on the earth. 13 After that God said to Noah: “The end of all flesh has come before me, because the earth is full of violence as a result of them; and here I am bringing them to ruin together with the earth.

Ah so it’s the violence that’s bugging Jehovah and how does he decide to deal with it? By wiping everything of the earth. I take it that Jehovah doesn’t see the hypocrisy with that?

Genesis 6:17
17 “And as for me, here I am bringing the deluge of waters upon the earth to bring to ruin all flesh in which the force of life is active from under the heavens. Everything that is in the earth will expire
The word cruel comes to mind here I mean Jehovah made us with free will right? And it seems he punishing them for using it

The Fact On Jehovah’s Witnesses

I had brought this book on Amazon thinking that this would be something more neutral compared to the other books I have ordered on religion. That was until I Googled the publishers of this book Harvest House and went on their website and found that all they sold was books from Christians to Christians. Have a look on their website here to see what I mean.

Despite that I was still interested in reading this as I’m an ex Jehovah’s Witness myself I wanted to see how much fact there was in this book and for the most part I feel they have most of the facts right.

Like they don’t believe in the trinity
They believe that the Watchtower Socialaty is God’s organisation on earth
They don’t accept blood transfusions
They don’t celebrate things like birthdays, Halloween, Christmas etc

However what I think could have been a good little book on Jehovah’s Witnesses was recked for two reasons

1. Is that they showed their bias in the very first page of this book by stating.

“Through their aggressive door-to-door proselytizing and authoritarian leadership”…

By using the word authoritarian it appears they have already make up theirs minds about the nature of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

2. Because of the last section of the book where it tells Jehovah’s Witnesses that are reading the book to say a certian prayer so they can be “saved”.

All I have to say to the authors is if a Jehovah’s Witness came to your door and told you about Paradise Earth and told you how you could be there to enjoy it by having lots of bible studies and going to meetings Would you do that? No? then why do you except them to accept your beliefs?.

So if you are looking for a book telling you what Jehovah’s Witnesses believe then I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Oh and I must warn you this book is only 93 pages long and that is if you include the notes at the end of the book.
